IDENTITY MARKETING FOR CONCERT ARTISTS, INC. (IMCA, Inc.)
https://www.htmlmanager.net/userpages/johnbellyoung/imcainc.html

Kirk Douglas, in his autobiography, relates an amusing story. Driving along on the outskirts of Los Angeles one day, he stopped to pick up a hitchhiker. As the young man got into the car, he recognized the famous actor and, in awe, asked "Do you know who you are?" Astonished by the simplicity but also the profundity of the question, Douglas pondered its meaning and considered if he even knew the answer.

Performing artists everywhere face the same dilemma daily. In today's highly competitive world of classical music, recognition equals identity. The performer who has not specifically defined his identity will make no impression on a public already saturated with information. The artist who stands out from the crowd is the one who makes a strong statement, artistically and personally, and gets his message out there. The artist who the public remembers is the one who takes risks on stage and off, who fears no controversy, and who invites debate. What is it that you, as a performer, want to say, and how do you want to communicate it? What is it about you that is unique, that sets you apart and can endear you to the public?

At IMCA, Inc. we presume our clients are savvy and experienced performers who know what they want where musical interpretation is concerned. But in today's cultural marketplace, success takes upon imagination and business savvy as much as it does on talent. The artist who fails to develop negotiating skills and delegates all responsibility while assuming none of his own will go nowhere fast. Musicians today, especially those whose objective is to establish the career of a soloist, are confronted at every turn by overwhelming obstacles. At IMCA, we show you how to turn those obstacles to your advantage.

The culture industry has traditionally perpetuated its own interests and those of its most famous stars, often at the expense of its less celebrated clients. How many horror stories have we heard of well meaning musicians who pay large retainers to agents and get nothing in return? Indeed, the industry has become so insulated and corrupt that gifted musicians who have something unique or important to say can't even get their foot in the door. Those among them who fail to understand that the music business is largely a brokerage industry, and who are untrained in brokerage skills, are at a disadvantage.

In today's communications-intense world information, and knowing what to do with it, are indispensable to survival in a field where the artist's ultimate goal is not only to make music, but also to enjoy himself and give pleasure to others. No longer is the conservatory graduate's future assured by winning a competition, making a debut at Carnegie Hall, or even making a recording. Today it is quality that matters, not quantity; what the music business values most is the artist who satisfies a niche in the market that no one else can. Concepts can be copied. Identity can't.

There are no easy answers, and the issues are complex. Even so, though no one can really expect to work outside of the system, the savvy artist knows how to get the system to work for him. In our view many musicians fail to grasp two fundamental issues:

1) That indispensable to any artist's career is a unique public identity that defines his specific objectives.
2) That opportunities await the artist who is imaginative, resourceful and above all self-reliant, providing he or she has also taken the time to cultivate basic negotiating skills

At IMCA, Inc. we will advise you on how to:

-Identify what sets you apart and makes you unique

TESTIMONIALS:

"John Bell Young has a creative, respectful and positive philosophy in his consultations with artists. He has given me professional advice for three years During this period he also arranged a number of auditions for me with major conductors and opera houses; arranged and negotiated a recording contract; introduced me to many important artists and contacts in the music industry; recommended repertoire for concerts and recording; as a pianist collaborated with me in concert; provided invaluable aid in writing and presenting my publicity materials; and arranged concerts in both Europe and America. He
identified a number of areas in which I could re-invent my image and presence in the music world. Thanks to him, I now have far more exposure on the Internet, and am singing repertoire that is well suited to my voice type, my image and marketability.
I have strengthened my ability "to be own manager" by following a philosophy and objectives that Mr. Young presented to me, not just a "cookbook" approach, but with an understanding of who I am as an individual and an artist. I have worked with managers here and abroad, but the services John Bell Young offers are unique and individual, but also realistic. He is a gifted person with a special intuition backed by an extensive knowledge base and a holistic approach to the difficulties artists face in
the music business today."

"As I have written elsewhere, John Bell Young stands out as one of the heroes of the end of this epoch. He introduced me to the Internet, and made it possible for me to reach a whole new public through my recordings. Though I am no longer performing as much as I once did, this is an exciting new world that has allowed me to re-establish my relationship with audiences around the world. I know of few people, including agents and impresarios, who are as effective at turning an idea into a reality as John Bell Young. Add to that his tremendous knowledge of the specific problems which classical artists encounter; his understanding, thanks to his own experience and exemplary virtuosity as a concert pianist himself, of the artistic and professional issues we all face; and his remarkably clear intuition about artists, the direction their careers ought to
take, and the music business. I cannot imagine a more tireless and devoted advocate for who and what he believes in. \"

I want to strongly endorse John Bell Young and his Image Marketing or Concert Artists (IMCA) Mr. Young recently produced my first CD, soon to be released on Americus Records. In conjunction with this CD, Mr. Young helped me to develop an MP3 site for promoting recordings and posting live performances. He also has provided me with invaluable advice and consultation in my creative endeavors, helping me to expand and clarify concepts for programming and marketing. As the music business quickly shifts the bulk of its operations on-line, it is people like John Bell Young who will be invaluable in assisting artists to stay ahead of this motion and be in a position to set trends. I sincerely hope that many artists will seek Mr. Young's services in the very near future.
